BAGHDAD, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Nine Kuwaiti flights were diverted to Basra International Airport in southern Iraq on Sunday due to poor weather at Kuwait International Airport, the Iraqi Transportation Ministry said.
A ministry statement said dense fog over Kuwaiti airspace reduced visibility, prompting the rerouting. All flights landed safely, demonstrating the airport's readiness and the efficiency of its crews.
Mahmoud Abdul-Sattar of the Iraqi Airports Administration confirmed to Xinhua that all planes landed without difficulty and are expected to return to Kuwait once conditions improve.
Flight operations at Kuwait International Airport resumed normal service later Sunday after the fog forced the diversions, Kuwait's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said. DGCA spokesperson Abdullah Al-Rajhi said horizontal visibility had dropped to less than 100 meters from around 2 a.m. (2300 GMT on Saturday), prompting precautionary measures to ensure passenger and aircraft safety.
Dense fog is common during Kuwait's winter and can occasionally disrupt flight schedules at the country's main international airport. The DGCA said it continues to monitor conditions to maintain safe and smooth air traffic. ■
