Ex-Liverpool defender Coates to extend Nacional deal

MONTEVIDEO, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Former Liverpool center-back Sebastian Coates is set to extend his contract with Uruguay's Nacional for another year, the Montevideo club said on Sunday.

Coates' current deal is due to expire this month but the club made clear its intention for the 35-year-old to continue.

"The captain will carry on for a while yet," Nacional said in a social media post alongside images of the defender celebrating the club's 50th league title last month.

Coates has made 59 appearances in all competitions since rejoining his boyhood club in January 2024.

He began his career at Nacional before securing a move to Liverpool in 2011. He later had spells at Sunderland and Sporting Lisbon, and earned 51 caps for Uruguay. ■
