Pic story: once illiterate woman becomes writer of award-winning books

Jiang Shumei practices calligraphy at home in Beilin District of Suihua City, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, Sept. 12, 2019. Born in 1937, Jiang was illiterate before the age of 60. To relieve Jiang's distress after the death of her husband in 1996 in a car accident, her daughter Zhang Ailing taught the aged woman reading and writing since then. With her daughter's encouragement, Jiang tried to write a book. In 2013, Jiang's first book was published. So far, the 82-year-old writer has published five books and won several awards.
